From the Author
Fifteen years ago, soon after my Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step book was published by North Light, Deb M. from Texas emailed asking if I could somehow give her lessons online. I remember reading the email to my daughter with a bit of incredulity. How could anyone ever teach anyone anything on the internet? Mind you, this was back in the summer of 1999. Computers and the internet were slow. But my teenage daughter said I could teach someone in Texas if I created an online magazine.
For someone who knew zero about websites or HTML, it was decidedly not easy. But with Websites for Dummies and loads of coffee and chocolate on hand, I decided to give it a try. Somehow, by December of '99, I managed to launch a website and the first issue of my online colored pencil magazine for 50 paying subscribers!
During that first year of the magazine, a friend experienced in publishing and writing told me that content was going to become a big problem for me. Sure, I could fill a few issues, but soon I'd run low on anything new to say. By that point, I was having an awful lot of fun writing the magazine, so I hoped that I could keep it going for at least 3 years. As it turns out, as the months and then years passed, I found there was always something new to say: new surfaces, new techniques, new books to review and more.
In 2014, Ann Kullberg's Colored Pencil Magazine celebrated 15 years in publication, with just over 1,100 subscribers from every corner of the world. Every single issue ever published is still available on our website. Over the years, the magazine has gotten a lot prettier and easier to navigate, but the bones of the magazine are the same today as they were at its birth: lessons, critiques, galleries and advice to help artists, both novices and professionals alike.
You hold in your hands the twelve issues published in 2014, but in reality it's a representation of 15 years of working with and championing the once humble colored pencil and those who love the medium. In the following collection, you'll find artwork that astounds, tips that amaze, artists that inspire and the chronicle of a year in the life of a boutique magazine serving the world's warmest, nicest and most loyal readers. You'll also find beautiful selected artwork from the magazine's 15th Annual Member Show and Theme Show that we are sure you'll enjoy. It's been a marvelous and rewarding 15 years serving colored pencil enthusiasts each month. We can only hope to be lucky enough to serve you for another fifteen. Happy Coloring! - Ann Kullberg
